Coastal Pike – Southern Archipelago (Sipoo to Loviisa)
Spring is in full swing along Finland’s southern coast, and post-spawn pike have moved into shallow waters to hunt baitfish. Conditions are prime in the archipelago, particularly in sun-warmed bays with muddy bottoms and reed-lined shores. Wind has been a small bummer but during days with small to minimum wind we have had excelent fishing
Current Conditions:
- Water Temperature: 8–10°C
- Water Clarity: Slightly stained, improving after recent rain
- Wind: Southwesterly; fish leeward bays for better casting and cleaner water
- Best Fishing Windows: Midday to late afternoon on sunny days
Recommended Tactics:
- Use intermediate or sink-tip lines to cover 1–2 meters of water
- Retrieve slowly with long pauses; vary speed based on fish response
- Fish are holding near shorelines, inlets, and shallow flats close to spawning areas
Top Flies:
- Large synthetic baitfish patterns and game changers, wiggle tail streamers (15–20 cm)
- Productive colors: white/chartreuse, olive/gold, black/red, all white
Trout – Central Finland Streams
Central Finland’s trout streams are entering a productive spring window. Flows are still elevated from snowmelt, but clarity has improved significantly. Trout are active and responding well to streamers, especially during the warmer parts of the day.
Current Conditions:
- Water Temperature: 5–7°C
- River Flow: Normal to high but steady
- Insect Activity: Sparse midge and stonefly hatches. Some egg laying february reds have been spotted in the south; more to come soon. Ants and terrestials are starting to show up
Streamer Fishing:
Early season is ideal for hunting larger trout with big, expressive patterns. Fish deeper seams, drop-offs, and bankside structure with sinking lines.
Recommended Streamers:
- Mini Dungeon
- Full-Size Dungeon
- Headbanger Sculpin
- Kreelex
- Mini D&D
- Coppter
Other Productive Approaches:
- Tight-line and Euro nymphing with beadhead patterns
- Dry-dropper fishing with larger stone fly patterns and a dropper nymphs
- Limited dry fly action — watch for surface feeding during afternoon lulls on calm days. Look out for stoneflies and midges
Seasonal Outlook
Fishing conditions continue to improve across southern and central Finland. With warmer weather on the way, expect rising trout activity, improved water clarity, and increasing dry fly opportunities. Pike remain active and aggressive in coastal shallows — a perfect time for fly anglers to target both species.
